Why Linux Sucks for Artists (And Why I Stick with Mac)

Most creative software only works on Ubuntu. That’s it. And even then, you have to check which exact version is supported—super annoying.

Unlike Windows, there’s no “one Linux distro to rule them all.” If you need a different distro, good luck installing essential tools without hunting down extra libraries.

Oh, and Ubuntu? It’s commercial. So much for the “free and open-source” Linux dream. Corporate wins again—what a shocker. Who knows what they sneak into it?

If you’re struggling to meet a deadline, it often indicates an underlying problem. It’s worth analyzing what exactly is causing the bottleneck, as it’s rare for a single task to take many hours. When this happens, after about 30 minutes or a couple of hours, I usually either ask for help or sit down with a piece of paper to try to understand what’s not working. Typically, the issue lies in either the technical part, the visual aspect, unclear comments, or simply fatigue, indicating that I need to take a walk and rest.

Tips on creating effects in houdini

  • Start developing the effects using simple shapes and logic. For example, a membrane between fingers could be a square or triangle. The lighter you keep it the better.
  • Look at nature to find references, photos and videos, notice why something works and something doesn’t!
